Erin let out a scream, too.

I jumped back and toppled into her. Tangled together, we stumbled from the doorway.

The guard stared straight ahead, hands on his waist, and didn’t move.

His face came into focus in the pale light. His eyes … his lips … they were painted on.

“He—he isn’t real,” Erin stuttered. “He’s a dummy, a mannequin. You know. Like in clothing stores.”

I let out a long whoosh of air. My heart was beating so hard, I think my T-shirt was bouncing with it.

I reached out with a trembling hand and slid it down the guard’s painted face. “It’s papier-mâché,” I said.

“They probably put him here to fool intruders,” Erin said.

“Well, we’re intruders,” I said, “and he fooled us.”

She hung back. “Are we still going through with this?”

“We have to,” I said. I bumped the mannequin out of the way and stepped into the dark hallway. “We don’t have a choice, Erin.”

“Of course we have a choice,” she said.

I waved her forward. “Come on. Hurry. The sooner we go downstairs—”

“I have to tell you something,” she said. “Maybe I’m too scared.”

“Too scared? But—”

“Kelly, do you know why my parents scheduled our trip to Barbados for tomorrow? Because they know I am terrified of Skwerm, and they wanted to rescue me from Friiight Night.”

“Okay …” I said.

“The vacation wasn’t an accident,” Erin said. “My parents wanted to save me from him.”

“Okay,” I said again. “And now you’re saving me from Skwerm. So let’s go and—”

“I’m not so sure that kidnapping the Madison Academy monster is the way to save you,” she said.

“It’s my only plan,” I told her. “My only chance.” I grabbed her hands and pulled her into the hallway. “No more discussion, okay? It’s time for action. I need you to help me. I might not be able to do it by myself.”

She lowered her head and didn’t reply. But she followed behind me as I made my way down the dark hall.

I had spent days studying the map of Madison online. I knew that the basement stairs were past the library, right after a left turn into another hall.

I could hear music and kids laughing from the gym. The sounds echoed in the empty hall.

I stopped in front of the basement door. My whole body was trembling. I turned to Erin. “We can do this.”

She still didn’t speak. She was looking down. Her hair had fallen over her face, but she made no effort to push it back.

“We can do this,” I repeated. I figured if I kept saying it, maybe I’d believe it.

Was it a totally crazy idea? To kidnap Burrrph and take him to our school to meet Skwerm?

Maybe. But it was my only idea.

I gripped the doorknob and pulled the basement door open. I peeked into the stairwell. A dim bulb hanging from the ceiling sent yellow light down the steep metal stairs. Pale light washed over the basement floor far below.

“Follow me,” I whispered to Erin. I stepped onto the top stair. Wrapped my hand around the metal railing.
